“You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” Winston Churchill
1) How old do I have to be to volunteer?
For most of our volunteer positions you must be 16 years old. There are some family opportunities that accommodate children 12 years and older. Volunteers under 18 will need parent/guardian consent.
2) How long before I can start volunteering?
From the time you inquire about an opportunity it can take about one month before you can start in your position. Applicants must attend an interview and complete an application package which includes a Police Information Check and Children’s Intervention Check. You will also be asked to provide two references.
3) What counts as accepted identification for the police check and child intervention check?
Two pieces of government issued identification, one of which must have a photo. Photo identification includes: driver’s license, learner’s license, passport, citizenship card, firearms acquisition license. Non-photo identification includes: Birth Certificate, Alberta Health Care Card, Social Insurance card. These are free for our volunteers.
4) How much time do I have to give?
We have a range of opportunities and commitment levels in order to accommodate our volunteers. We provide three types of involvement including occasional (one time helping with an event or special project), relief (fill a vacant shift and pick the shifts that suit your schedule), and regular (ongoing bi-weekly 3 hour scheduled shifts). We ask that volunteers commit to volunteering for a year.
5) Can I volunteer for more than one program?
Yes, if it fits your schedule, you can even do different jobs in different programs.
6) Can I bring my children with me to volunteer?
Positions are designed to support the staff in their positions supporting the clients in the program. Bringing your children increases the ratio of adults to children in care and is not within our certification standards.
