Descriptions of Volunteer Roles

Our volunteers help support all of our programs in different ways.

Brenda’s House: Support a family experiencing homelessness while they are staying at our transitional family shelter – Brenda’s House. Volunteer roles include; Child Care, Activity Leaders/Program Facilitator, Drivers and Cooking Assistants.

Crisis Nursery: Help make a difference in a child’s life while they are staying our Crisis Nursery. Some of the roles  Child Care, Activity Leaders, Office Assistants, Donation Sorters, and Cooking Assistants, are a few of the roles that volunteers have in supporting the children and staff at the Crisis Nursery.

In-home Infant Respite: This program is designed to assist parents of newborn infants (0-6 months) when alternate respite options are not available. Volunteers and staff go into homes to provide the respite needed for families with multiple births.

Description of Volunteer Roles.

Child care - Help make a difference in a child’s life when they are staying at one of our facility based programs. Assist us with child care duties such as feeding, bathing, diaper changing, dressing. Locations: Crisis Nursery – Bridgeland and Satelite Nursery (Cranston), Brenda’s House. Shift times: shifts vary Monday thru Sunday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. An orientation and training to the specific program is provided.
 
Program Facilitators - Do you have a special skill that you would like to share? Lead a music class, help children create masterpieces of art, or perhaps you’d like to teach yoga. Help us provide a creative and meaningful program to families and children. Locations: Crisis Nursery – Bridgeland and Satelite Nusery(Cranston), Brenda’s House. Shift times: shifts vary Monday - Sunday from 9a.m. to 8 p.m. An orientation to each specific program is provided.
 
In-home Infant Respite - Accompany our in-home infant respite staff into the homes of parents with newborns, 0 – 6 months of age. Volunteers will assist our staff and help provide respite to families who have multiple births (twins, triplets) Volunteers are required to have infant care experience and a reliable vehicle. Hours are Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., every other week. An orientation and training is provided
 
Baker or Kitchen Assistant - Do you love being in the kitchen? Help our Kitchen staff provide healthy, balanced meals and snacks to the children at our Crisis Nursery or the families at Brenda’s House. Locations: Crisis Nursery – Bridgeland and Satelite Nursery (Cranston), Brenda’s House. Shift times: shifts vary Monday - Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.  
 
Office Administrative Support Do you like to work in an office setting? Assist in a wide variety of duties such as filing; prepare mailings, Shifts Monday – Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
 
Donation Sorter - Sort clothing and toy donations that are stored at the Crisis Nursery Garage. Shifts Monday – Sunday from 9 a.m. -6 p.m.
 
Drivers - Help make a difference by picking up and delivering food and other donations as needed. Vehicle is required. Shifts as needed as an on call basis.
 
Corporate or Group Volunteering -The Children’s Cottage Society has many different projects throughout the year that are perfect for groups that wish to come together to give back to the community and share with others. Projects include;
  • Seasonal or holiday decorating and activities
  • Landscaping, gardening, cleaning and tidying.
  • Building maintenance, repairs or upgrades.
  • Fundraising projects and special events.
  • Baking and meal preparation
These are just a few of the projects that have been completed by volunteer groups. If you have an idea, please contact us and we will try to make it happen.
 
Board of Directors - Share your commitment to providing quality respite and support to the families of Calgary by taking a leadership role on the Board of Directors of the Society. Learn about how our organization works and share your talents and skills on various committees of the board of directors, which includes; communications, fundraising, information technology or program evaluation.
 
Fundraising or Special Events - Almost half of the Children's Cottage Society annual operating funds are raised by fundraising. Help out with just a few hours of your time at a wide range of fundraising and special events.
